ALEXEY BOGORAD WINS MATAČIĆ COMPETITION!
5th International Competition of Young Conductors Lovro von Matačić, Zagreb 3-7 Oct. 2011

5th International Competition of Young Conductors Lovro von Matačić got it's winner: It's Alexey Bogorad from Russia! At the final concert on Oct. 7th, held as a part of Zagreb Concert Management's World of Music Concert Series, three finalists that proved the best in past five days performed in front of six member international jury: Nikša Bareza, Leopold Hager, Géza Kovács, Jorma Panula, Thomas Sanderling and president Berislav Klobučar. The best three candidates out of sixteen that arrived in Zagreb to participate at the Competition were, with Alexey Bogorad, Robert Farkas from Hungary and Kah Chun Wong from Singapore. Each of them performed one piece from the concert program: R. Strauss's Till Eulenspiegel lustige Streiche (Wong), K. Baranović's Gingerbread Heart Suite (Farkas) and J. Brahms's 3rd Symphony, op. 90 (Bogorad). Hence, they got one more chance to prove their skills with Croatian Radiotelevision Orchestra, this time in front of the audience at Vatroslav Lisinski Concert Hall as well as in live broadcast at Croatian Radio 3rd Program and live stream on internet.
Three monetary prizes of Lovro and Lilly Matačić Foundation were awarded almost unanimously: 7000 € won Alexey Bogorad, 5000 € won Kah Chun Wong and 3000 € won Robert Farkas. There were also special prizes for the competitors provided by croatian and foreign music institutions. Alexey Bogorad won Award from the Croatian Musicians Society and the Audience Award provided by TOZ Penkala. Robert Farkas gained appearance with the Croatian RTV Orchestra during one of the upcoming seasons. Croatian representative Filip Pavišić won appearance with the Varaždin Chamber Orchestra and Award from the Croatian Music Institute.

Four days after the beggining, the 5th International Competition of Young Conductors Lovro von Matačić has reached it's grand finale - concert of three finalists which will be held as part of the Zagreb Concert Management's World Music Series! Six candidates were competing in Round Three performing a mandatory piece (K. Baranović's Gingerbread Heart Suite) and a piece from the set list. International jury chaired by Mo Berislav Klobučar chose three of them to participate at the final concert on Oct. 7 at 7.30 at the Vatroslav Lisinski Concert Hall. In front of Croatian Radio Television Symphony Orchestra and in front of the audience will appear: Kah Chun Wong (Singapore), Robert Farkas (Hungary) and Alexey Bogorad (Russia). Each will conduct only one piece from the concert program as follows: R. Strauss's Till Eulenspiegel lustige Streiche, K. Baranović's Gingerbread Heart Suite and J. Brahm's 3rd Symphony. There will be a possibility for the audience to vote for their favourite as well as to attend an interview with finalists. The 7 000 EUR first prize of Lovro and Lilly Matačić Foundation goes to the winner while the second gaines 5 000 EUR, and the third 3 000 EUR prize. Besides other valuable prizes, all the other competitiors will receive Competition Diplomas. The final concert will be recorded by Croatian Television and live broadcasted by 3rd Program of Croatian Radio. Live stream is available at

During two days (Oct. 4 & 5) of Round Two of the 5th International Competition of Young Conductors Lovro von Matačić, each of sixteen candidates had a chance to be presented through 30 minutes while performing two mandatory pieces and one from the set list. On Wednesday, Oct. 5th at 9 pm were announced names of the candidates for the Round Three chosen by the international jury under the chairmanship of Mo Berislav Klobučar.

At Wednesday, Oct. 5, the President of the Republic of Croatia, Mr. Ivo Josipović has welcomed six-member international jury, sixteen candidates of the Round Two and delegation of the Lovro and Lilly Matačić Foundation, as well as representatives of the organization of the 5th International Competition of Young Conductors Lovro von Matačić. The meeting was held at President's chambers at Pantovčak.
